Research, Investigation and Storytelling: emerging narratives in journalism and journalism studies

Call for Papers

The 2008 JEA conference will be hosted by the University of Wollongong. The conference will include several keynote plenary panels and a series of streamed panel sessions. Five keynote panels are currently being planned. These will involve three or four invited local academics presenting a series of interconnected presentations on their topic.
Building research capacity for journalism studies
Chair: Penny O’Donnell (U Syd)
Research investigation and storytelling a dialogue between journalists and creative writers
Chair: Susan Angel (UOW)
Aboriginal narratives: media, history, identity
Chair: Siobhan McHugh (UOW)
Reporting and teaching diversity
Chair: Gail Phillips (Murdoch)
Government media relations: scale, processes and impact on the nation (SPIN)
Chair: Mark Pearson (Bond)

Streamed concurrent panel sessions will enable academics, practitioners and senior postgraduate students to present 20 minute papers on current research or approaches to journalism education. Papers that further develop aspects of the keynote themes around:

• Investigative strategies and investigative reporting
• Storytelling and narrative
• Research capacity building
• Indigenous media narratives
• Diversity in media and journalism education
• Political media management
• Development and influence of online media

are particularly welcome but papers are not restricted to these themes.

The conference will accept papers on the basis of refereed abstracts or where necessary for accreditation purposes as fully refereed conference papers. There will be opportunities to present revised papers for formal peer review for publication in Australian Journalism Review or Asia Pacific Media Educator after the conference.

29 August: Deadline for abstract proposals
15 September: Notification of abstract acceptance
3 October: Deadline for fully reviewed papers
Please submit an abstract in the first instance by 29 August with an indication as to whether or not you also wish to submit a full paper for peer review prior to the conference.
